Background of the Study
Free maternal healthcare policies have been introduced across Nigeria to improve maternal health outcomes, reduce mortality rates, and ensure that every woman has access to quality care during pregnancy and childbirth (Ndukwe & Ahmed, 2023). At the University of Jos Teaching Hospital (UJTH), the implementation of free maternal healthcare has aimed to eliminate financial barriers to maternal care, particularly for low-income women. These policies have been associated with increased utilization of maternal health services, such as antenatal care, skilled birth attendance, and postnatal care.
However, while free maternal healthcare is intended to improve access to care, there is limited research on how it affects patient influx in teaching hospitals. This study will evaluate the effect of free maternal healthcare policies on the volume of patients seeking maternal care at UJTH, particularly looking at changes in the number of pregnant women accessing care and the demand for hospital services.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the introduction of free maternal healthcare policies, there are concerns regarding the increased patient influx at UJTH. While the policy is designed to improve access, the surge in patient numbers has led to overcrowding, strained resources, and increased pressure on healthcare providers. Additionally, there is limited data on how this influx has impacted the quality of care provided. This study seeks to evaluate the effects of free maternal healthcare policies on patient influx and service delivery at UJTH.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the effect of free maternal healthcare policies on the influx of pregnant women at UJTH.
2. To evaluate how the increased patient influx has affected the quality of maternal healthcare services at UJTH.
3. To identify strategies for managing the impact of the patient influx on service delivery at UJTH.
Research Questions
1. How has the introduction of free maternal healthcare policies affected the influx of pregnant women at UJTH?
2. What impact has the increased patient influx had on the quality of maternal healthcare services at UJTH?
3. What strategies can be implemented to manage the effects of patient influx on healthcare delivery at UJTH?
Research Hypotheses
1. The introduction of free maternal healthcare policies has significantly increased the influx of pregnant women seeking care at UJTH.
2. The increased influx of patients has had a negative impact on the quality of maternal healthcare services at UJTH.
3. Implementing improved resource management and patient flow strategies can mitigate the effects of the increased patient influx at UJTH.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the impact of free maternal healthcare policies at UJTH and will not assess similar policies at other healthcare facilities. Limitations include the potential for incomplete patient data and the challenge of generalizing findings to other institutions.
